This lagre spa centre flourished for centuries, visited by ill people from near and far. A description is preserved by the wife of Emperor Tiberius II, who was successfully cured in Thermopolis around year 580 and as a sign of gratitude donated her Empress cloak to the local church. In 1206 with the invasion of the Latin Emperor Henrich in the Bulgarian Kingdom, the resort was destroyed and burned down. The Emperor’s military commander, Geoffroi de Villehardouin, writes:
‘This was a very pretty town, well-situated, with many warm springs for bathing – the best in the world. We took huge amounts of spoil from there.’
Not until 350 years later the Turkish sultan Syuleyman II built a bath, which after major reconstruction is used today.
