Nature

The town of Hissar is a modern spa resort, situated in a small valley with the same name in the southern foot of Sashtinska Sredna Gora mountain. To the north it is sheltered by the Sredna Gora mountain, behind which one can see the Balkan peaks of Botev, Levski and Koupena. To the south the horizon is open to the broad Upper Thracian Valley, which provides excellent orientation towards the sun and forms a picturesque view in the distance.

The climate is mixed transitional-continental. The average annual temperature is about 11.9°С and the greatest number of sunny days – 280 per year. Summer is moderately hot with lower humidity. Winter is mild with short snow coverage. Spring is fresh and winter – moderately warm and continuous.

Historical sites

Remains from an antique town, Roman baths, several churches. Due to the excellent natural resources, favourable climate and numerous warm mineral springs, this area was inhabited almost without a break from the ancient times until today. The earliest prehistoric settlements were founded around the 5th millennium B.C. Later the territory was populated by the Thracian tribe of the besses, which in the 5th and first half of 4th century B.C. was not part of the Odrysian kingdom.

Unlike the other settlements in the Roman province of Thrace in that age, the settlement at the warm mineral springs (today’s Hissar) expanded to such an extent, that in the 2nd – 3rd century A.D. it became a town of considerable size. In the beginning of 4th c. A.D. during the reign of the Roman emperor Diocletian, the town is surrounded by tall and thick fortress walls, the remains of which can be seen even today. Trips are organized to the Thracian cult centre of Starosel.
