Mineral waters

The mineral waters in the resort are numerous and various in their composition - more than 70 springs with hot mineral water. Their total flow-rate is considerable - 142 litres per second, which makes over 12 million litres in 24 hours, and their temperature varies from 46°C to 94°C. All waters have a low level of mineralization, sulphate-hydrocarbonate-sodium waters with high alcaline reaction, low carbonation, pleasant taste and drinking qualities.

Treatment indications

The resort is recommended for treatment of pulmonary diseases: bronchitis, bronchial asthma, locomotor system, the peripheral nervous system and the central nervous system – neuralgia, radiculitis, neuritis, lumbago and discal hernia, rheumatoid polyathritis, ostheoporosis, digestion system diseases.

Nature

The resort's altitude is 754 metres. Climate is marked by a cool summer and mild winter. These climatic characteristics place the resort in the category of full-year health and spa resorts. There are excellent opportunities for complex spa and climatic treatment, as well as prophylaxis, recreation and tourism. Here is situated the Balkans' largest karst water spring, 'Kleptuza', which is one of the town symbols. The radonium bath with the healing mud pools, the sulphuric springs 'Topilata', the areas of 'Yundola', 'Belmeken', 'Kourtovo' and many other natural beauty spots complete the list of attractive places in the resort. The Lepenitsa cave, which is a high-value tourist spot, is situated 12 km away from Velingrad.

Historical sites

Legends say that once upon a time Orpheus lived in these areas. Tales speak of these Rhodoppe lands as the source that gave Spartacus, the leader of the slave uprising in ancient Rome, his titanic powers. About 18 km east of Velingrad in the area of the village of Dorkovo is the Bulgarian fortress of Tsepina, the capital of Despot Slav's lands.

Transport

Velingrad is situated 133 km south-east of Sofia, 85 km north-east of Plovdiv, and 45 km south-west of Pazardzhik. The town has a good transport infrastructure, which includes roads and a railway.
